Hallowed be your name. The opening and yet the pinnacle of how the Lord has taught us to pray. For all of creation’s aim is to this end: to revere as holy and give endless praise to the only triune God from whom all things find their beginning, are sustained by His power, and purposed for His glory (Romans 11:36). God being so significant as the creator and sustainer of all things, it only makes sense that the first thing out of our mouths as we pray would be to hallow the name of Yahweh.
Pause for a moment and attune your heart to the worthiness and magnificence of God by opening your Bible and reading Job 38-42:1-6...
Try to not hallow the name of God after reading that! For the regenerate in Christ, it cannot be done! How glorious is the splendor of His majesty (Psalm 145), and how appropriate is Job’s response? Even further is the magnificence of this same God drawing near to us in the form of mankind as the person of Jesus Christ.
Pause once again and attune your heart to the preeminence of Christ by reading Colossians 1:15-20…
All things were created through Him and for His glory. How remarkable it is that Christ would create us for His glory, knowing our sin would separate us from his holiness, yet exalt us still by making peace by the blood of His cross so that we in response would make much of Him. Surely we can say, “hallowed be Your name”!
By making peace with God on our behalf, “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His glory and excellence…” (1 Peter 1:3). We have been given everything we need in Christ. Our God is a God of provision who has provided for His people through the ages, and His provision is plentiful. Just as God gave the Israelites bread from heaven during their 40 year exile in the wilderness before entering the promised land, He has given us the Bread of Life during our exile awaiting the promised Kingdom of Heaven, of which we are citizens. Christ and His presence is indeed our daily bread. It is Him we run to for spiritual nourishment as He alone can fully satisfy. He is The Good Shepherd who has given us Himself, who has lavished us with His love, and who has made us recipients of this perfect provision. In the now, we feast on Christ’s presence as we eagerly await the day when we feast with Him in the new heaven and new earth. To this we say, "forever amen".
